Abstract

Purpose: Investing in cultural capital is vital for universities operating within the knowledge economy; however, integrated models linking knowledge management (KM) processes to cultural value creation in higher education remain limited. This study aims to develop a KM-based model to support investment in cultural capital at King Abdulaziz University.

Design/methodology/approach: A mixed-methods design was employed. Quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire distributed to 240 academic and administrative leaders, while qualitative insights were gathered from a focus group of seven experts in KM and the cultural sector to refine the model. The study examined knowledge generation, storage, sharing, and application.

Findings: The results indicate a strong perceived role for KM in supporting investment in cultural capital, with an overall mean score of 4.02. Knowledge sharing had the highest mean (4.22), followed by knowledge storage (4.20), generation (4.12), and application (4.09). Based on these findings, the study proposes an integrated KM model linking core KM processes to cultural capital development.

Research limitations/implications: The model is conceptually developed and contextually informed by empirical evidence from a single Saudi university. Further research is needed to examine its applicability across different higher education contexts.

Practical implications: The model offers practical guidance for university leaders and policymakers seeking to promote cultural investment and institutional competitiveness and may support the mobilization of intellectual resources for sustainable cultural value creation.

Originality/value: The study integrates KM processes with cultural capital investment in higher education and offers an original conceptual framework for examining how universities may mobilize intellectual resources to support cultural value creation, providing contextual evidence from a Saudi university within the knowledge economy.
